An incomplete post-medieval copper-alloy and gilded dress-pin with filigree and granulated ornament dating to AD1500 - 1600. The pin shaft is missing.
The head is hollow and spherical, 13.6 mm in diameter. It is made up of two hemispheres joined at a transverse seam masked by a double-stranded band of applied twisted wire. Both hemispheres are decorated with three applied circles of twisted wire, containing a central pellet surrounded by three further, equally spaced, circles. There is an applied pellet between each larger circle, with a small applied cirle of wire in each spandrel. There is an applied pellet at the apex of the pin head, with a truncated stub of the lost pin projecting from the opposite side. There are traces of gilding visible on the surface. The height of the pin head is 14.5mm and it weighs 1.63g.
Similar pins made of silver gilt are relatively commonly reported through the treasure process, see SOM-66CE77 and SOM-CD8CD7, amongst others, however gilt copper alloy examples are also known, e.g. SOM-48704D.
