A complete, medieval, copper alloy buckle (c. 1300 - 1550). The object consists of a D-shaped buckle frame, with plate and pin in situ. The outer edge of the D-shaped frame is slightly concave where the pin meets it. The frame is 24.5mm in length and 13.7mm in width. The copper alloy pin is complete, and attached to the bar via an open loop. It measures 13.8mm, and is triangular in shape and rectangular in cross section. It has a transverse ridge part way down the shaft. The plate is rectangular in shape, with a decorative trefoil terminal opposite the buckle. The surface of the plate is decorated with a pair of quartrafoils infilled with incised dots, many of which retain evidence of the original gilding which covered the whole plate. In the centre of the fleur-de-lis is an copper alloy rivet which holds the back of the plate in place around the bar. Overall measurements of the buckle and plate, 34.7mm in length, 24.5mm in width. Similar shaped buckles are depicted in Whitehead 1996, p. 24-5, nos 115-9, where they are described as kidney-shaped and dated to c. 1450 - 1550. A broadly similar shaped plate is also illustrated (Whitehead 1996, p. 26, no. 131) and dated to c. 1300 - 1500.
