SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: DEV-2F100E

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A Medieval copper alloy pedastal-type seal matrix, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1400. The seal has an oval base, although its edges are highly abraded, from the reverse of which expands the faceted hexagonal-sectioned pedastal handle. The handle terminates in a trefoilate knop, with a drilled circuar perforation to form a loop, and with this preceded by a rounded collar. The face of the seal is engraved with a probable depiction of St Catherine, depicting a crowned female figure stood facing, holding an wheel with a equal armed cross in the centre and regularly spaced angled rays coming from the edge, and flanked by palm fronds. The inscription is illegible, with the only discernable character being a possible retrograde N at 3 o'clock on the matrix.

Dimensions: length 26.8mm; width 20.5mm; height 29.2mm; weight 14.42g.
