An incomplete copper-alloy pin of possible Roman date, c.AD 43 - 410. The pin comprises a conical head with a smaller integral inverted cone projecting from the top. The remains of a circular sectioned shaft project centrally from the base of the head and terminates in a worn break.
The metal has a mid-green patina and is extremely worn. The pin is 11.5mm long, the head is 4.3mm in diameter at the top, 7mm in diameter at the widest point and the shaft is 1.7mm in diameter. The pin weighs 1.3g.
Similar examples have been recorded as YORYM-D65BBA and YORYM-35E854. Conical pins of metal are also illustrated in Crummy (1983) p.31, no.500 along with numerous bone examples; p.21-24. Pins of this form are likely to be hair pins however as such objects can be used for multiple tasks it is difficult to attribute a definite function.
