An incomplete copper alloy strap-end of Early-Medieval date, c.AD 800 - 1000. The strap end is of Thomas' Class E, Type 1: Winchester Style. Only the split attachment end remains, which is sub-rectangular in plan. The main body, which appears to have been openwork, has been lost to worn breaks. A central rivet is present at the open end of the plate. The upper surface is decorated with six evenly spaced ring and dot designs and a double transverse raised ridge is present at the broken end. The raised ridges continue to the reverse plate.
The metal has a mid-green-brown patina and is worn. The strap end is 21.6mm long, 15.5mm wide, 4.8mm thick and weighs 5.1g.
Thomas (2000, p.108) describes Winchester Style strap-ends as having roots in the art forms of southern England. The decoration usually takes the form of foliage, often simplified to a symmetrical openwork pattern. Ring-and-dot decoration is common on these strap-ends (Thomas (2000, p.108) and all examples so far known are made from copper alloy.
