Copper-alloy object of uncertain function, possibly a cap from the handle of a post-medieval to modern knife or dagger, c. 1500 - 1900 AD. The object is oval in plan and trapezoid in section. The bottom face is completely flat, while the sides angle towards each other and curve inwards slightly at the top. There is a central aperture which is rectangular on the upper face and oval on the under face, running along the length of the object. The rectangular edge of the aperture is bent and uneven, while the oval edge is crisp and sharp. The upper surface seems to have been coated with some protective substance post-retrieval and is dark green and shiny. The under surface appears unmodified and is a pale green-brown. The surface and edges of the object are worn and chipped. The object is 31.0mm in length, 27.0mm in width and 8.0mm at maximum thickness. It weighs 24.45g. This object shares some similarity to late and post-medieval knife or dagger pommels such as KENT-26984C and NARC-54F42D, especially in the central aperture for the tang. Yet, these tend to be hollow and spherical in shape. If knife related, the central aperture suggests an earlier rather than a later date as modern knives tend to have screw tangs (Pers. Comm., Edward Wood). Identification in this case must therefore remain uncertain.
