THIMBLE

Unique ID: SUSS-ADCEC6

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper-alloy open-top thimble, or 'sewing ring', of Medieval to post-Medieval date. The object comprises a broad ring with four bands of hand-drilled holes around the outside. In several places, the holes have merged with neighbouring holes and in one case this has pierced the ring.

Ring type thimbles are found in British contexts from around 1450 (Holmes 1988:1). This thimble is similar to one found in Holmes 1988 fig. 4 which is dated to c.1450 - 1550.
