An incomplete post-medieval rowel spur, probably dating to c. AD 1600 - 1700. The arms of the spur are plano-convex in cross section, terminating in a figure of eight-shaped terminal deliniated by a transverse collar. One terminal is missing. The neck follows a U-shaped curve, with a longitudinal ridge on its underside. The following a simple collar the neck bifurcates into the rowel box, with two straight, plano-convex sectioned arms terminating in a perforated lug, also deliniated by a collar. The rowell and axis bar are missing; traces of iron corrosion remain in the perforations.

Dimensions: Length 108mm; Width 67mm; Thickness 15.2mm; weight 39.2g.

Ellis (2002) notes that rowell spurs largely replaced prick spurs in Western Europe from the 14th century onwards, however most examples are much later than this, with many smaller and more decorative examples dating to the 17th century when they became increasingly fashionable. Rowell spurs of very comparable form were found in contexts dated to c. AD 1600-1650 and c. AD 1650-1700 during excavations in Norwich, and are illustrated by Margeson (1993: 221-222, nos. 1799 & 1800), who cites the appearance of similar rowell spurs on portraits dating to the first half of the 17th century.
