An apparently incomplete early post-medieval (c.1500-1600) openwork silver button. It comprises a convex openwork filigree octofoil with a coil of twisted silver wire in each foil, with a circle of twisted wire around a central globular pellet. Within the ends of three of the coils is a tiny silver globular pellet. Running around the inside of this hemi-spherical part is the remains of a sheet-silver backing, the edges jagged where it is damaged and incomplete. A further (incomplete) circular piece of sheet silver lies flat across the base. Over this and centrally aligned is a straight length of filigree extending from between two small roundels at one end. It is otherwise incomplete.
The object measures 11.9mm in diameter and length, 10.4mm in width, 4.0mm in height, 0.6mm in thickness and weighs 0.58g.
Cf. NMS-0B3E27, NARC-148471 and ESS-BDFAE1, all of which have similarities in decoration but rather different fixing mechanisms.
