An incomplete copper alloy trumpet brooch dating to the Roman period. The brooch has atypical oval or 'trumpet' shaped head. The bow tapers in width down the bow where it terminates with an ancient break above the foot. In the centre of the bow is an oval waist moulding consisting of a raised central ridge, bordered by a ridge on each side and another ridge both above and below. The remains of linear grooves can be seen on the lower ridge however the others are worn.
At the rear of the head is a central pierced lug to which the spring would have been secured. The lug is surrounded by iron corrosion. The pin is missing. Only the very top of the catch plate remains above the terminal break. The brooch has a mid-green patina and is in poor condition.
Dimensions: 30mm in length, 11mm in width, 7.4g
Trumpet brooches are typically dated from AD75-175. A more complete example of a trumpet brooch recorded on the PAS database is LVPL-31143E.
