A complete cast copper alloy zoomorphic strap fitting or belt hook, of Early Post Medieval to modern dating (AD 1575 to 1900).

The belt hook is S shaped with an oval cross section. A zoomorphic probable snake headed terminal is present at one end with a narrowed and rounded nose. One face is decorated with two oval eyes with a pellet in the centre. The snake has an arched brow. The reverse of the head is plain. The opposing terminal is the snakes tail which is narrowed and more pointed compared to the head end. The side of the decorated face is covered with a continuous pattern to represent the scales. The decoration consists of a number of interlocking diamond forms in light relief. The opposing side has a repeating pattern of ribs in light relief that are placed horizontally across the body. The belt hook has a light brown to green coloured patina.

The earliest similar snake-form fasteners appear on portraits of the early post-Medieval period, often in association with sword-belts. Read has published a similar belt fitting, No. 822 (Read, 2008, 230) which he has dated to c. mid 16th to c. early 17th Century, possibly from a sword belt. However the style is a relatively long lived one, persisting into the 20th Century.

Several similar belt fittings have been recorded on the PAS database, SWYOR-49F4F6 discovered in North yorkshire and LVPL-BF5556 from Merseyside.

The strap fitting measures 41.9 mm in length, 21.3 mm wide and 5.4 mm thick. It weighs 16.4 g.
