A complete knapped gun-flint from a flintlock musket of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1600 - 1900. The flint is retangular in shape, and trapezoid in cross section, and has been worked around the edges of the flint. The flint is a light brown colour, with white patches. It measures 33.9mm in length, 25.8mm in width, 6.8mm in thickness, and weighs 8.23g.
The gunflint is similar to YORYM-5F5645, which explains that 'the flintlock was first used from the mid 16th century and became part of the main regulation firearm for the British army during the reign of William III. The knapped flint was used within the musket mechanism to produce a spark and could last between 20-25 shots before it had to be replaced.'
