A Mesolithic - Neolithic (10,000 - 2100 BC) flint pick with a triangular cross-section and roughly parallel sides, all of which narrow to either end, one of which is a broad point and the other an apparently natural blunt end one set transversely to the point. This blunt end has a different surface colouring to most of the rest of the object, presumably an 'original' surface of the flint, now a creamy-orange 'light toffee' colour.
While all three faces are of similar dimensions, the flat broad point gives one flat face and one with a prominent apex. Two long narrow flake scars are apparent from the apex to the point, with a further two small wide flake removals at the left of the edge. The flatter face has several large mulit-directional flake scars, but all angled towards the edges. This gives the object a rather twisted appearance.
The flint is opaque and a greyish-blue in colour with heavy areas of white/ grey patination and remains of cortex (particularly along the prominent apex of one side of the object).
It measures 155.6mm in length, 53.5mm in max.width, 49.1mm in max. thickness and weighs 402g (to the nearest 2g).
With thanks to Mike Trevarthen and Ciorstaidh Hayward Trevarthen for the identification of this object.
