A copper alloy Roman Aucissa brooch dating from AD 25 - 75. The strip brooch has a head formed by rolling the strip forwards, under and then over the axis bar to form a tube. The axis bar and the pin are missing. Iron corrosion indicated the material of one of the missing pieces. The head does not appear to be inscribed "Aucissa" as on the brooches which gave this class their name. A transverse band of ropework decorates the head, and then the strongly arched bow has a central longitudinal ridge. At the base of the curved part of the bow is another group of transverse ridges. The short lower bow is flat and terminates in a spherical foot. The catchplate projects from the lower bow and is incomplete. The brooch is corroded and there are chips in the patina and along the edges of the brooch. It is also bent out of shape. Compare examples on page 317 of Hattatt's Visual Catalogue. Compare also IOW-8F4753 and SWYOR-2D6835. The brooch is 34.6mm long, 11.9mm wide and 28mm thick. 3.95g. It has a dark green patina.
