A complete cast copper alloy figurine in the form of a raven or crow (length: 33.3mm; width: 12.9mm; thickness/ depth: 27mm; weight: 21.19g), dating to the 1st/ 2nd century AD. The bird’s wings are folded slightly across each other on its back, and have been incised to indicate feathers, as well as the same being done on its upper body. The eyes and beak of the bird has also been incised to indicate specific features. The bird could have been free standing but it was probably attached to another object by the feet. The top of the feet have a single groove across which could have been the contact point. Overall, the artefact is in a slight worn but good condition.

Similar examples are illustrated in Green’s ‘Small Cult – Objects from the Military Areas of Roman Britain’, 1978, plates 66-72, from Chesterholm, Chesters, York and Corbridge.
