Discussion
Treasure reference 2018 T258: a Middle Saxon silver gilt pin. The head is globular, solid, and decorated with four deep channels radiating from the apex, dividing the head into four convex pointed oval panels. Each channel is flanked by a much narrower channel. An integral shank of circular section extends from the base. The shank is broken shortly after it leaves the base. The break is patinated and worn, suggesting the break occured in antiquity.
Dimensions
Total Length: 17mm
Diameter of shank: 3mm
Diameter of head: 10mm
Discussion
The criss-cross grooves on the head of the pin resembles that seen on a copper alloy example discovered at Southampton (Hinton 1996, Fig. 8, no.349/151). While the present silver gilt example is currently without exact parallel, it seems likely to be of Early Medieval date rather than Tudor.
