Description: The object consists of a small piece of curved silver brooch frame. The fragment is flat with two curved long edges and two damaged smaller edges. There is part of a circular hole at once broken edge which would have held the pin.
The frame has been decorated with a repeating pattern. This consists of a raised circular silver annulet in the centre of a circle which gives the appearance of twisted filigree wire. Beyond this is a further circle with the same design. The circular pattern is repeated three times with small circular pellets at each corner. In total there are six small circular pellets. The front face also appears to have been gilded. The reverse is undecorated and flat with a gilded surface.
Dimensions:
The fragment measures in Length: 12.9 mm, Width: 5 mm, Thickness: 1.4 mm and Weight: 0.4 grams.
Discussion: The fragment shares similarities with Treasure case: 2017 T1070 discovered in Lincolnshire along with 2012 T694 discovered in Norfolk. Both of these are suggested as dating to 13th or 14th centuries AD.
Notes:
Conclusion: Based on the parallels in terms of age and that this item is formed from silver with a gilded surface it has a precious metal content of at least 10% and therefore as a single item should qualify as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
