An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative, Polden Hill type brooch, dating from c. AD 80-120. Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 5. b2, flat wing ends type, Western Group 2. Plate 50.The brooch has rearward facing lugs (end caps) on either end of the wings which would have held the pin axis bar, the spring and pin, which are all now missing. The wings are decorated with two recessed vertica mouldings at their ends. A broken loop at the top of the head would have held the external cord of the spring. Flanking the head are expanded shoulders decorated with linear ridges. The bow of the brooch narrows and extends from the shoulders, but the lower half of the bow is broken and missing, as is the catchplate.
