A medieval copper alloy rectangular framed annular brooch, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1325. The brooch survives largely complete, and comprises of a sub-square frame with a sub-triangular cross section; the upper face being internally bevelled. Each corner of the frame is perforated, with a sexfoil rove held in place by a large, sub-spherical-headed copper alloy rivet, each c.6mm in diameter. An unelaborated copper alloy pin, D-shaped in corss-section has been attached to the frame, wrapped around a constriction in the centre of one of the frame's arms. The thickness of the frame measures to 2.5mm.
Length: 21.9mm; width: 21mm; thickness: 8.5mm; weight: 7.06g.
A brooch nearly identical in form has been published by Egan and Pritchard (2002, p. 256, no. 1343), excavated in a context dating to c. AD 1230-1260. A comparable, although less complete example can also be seen recorded on this database: LIN-03F699. HAMP471, also on this database, is also similar, but more elaborate; featuring highly projecting collets which Hinton (2005: 219-220) notes had gone out of style by the early 14th century.
