An incomplete lead alloy button, probably of late Medieval dating (about AD 1300 - 1500) and with evidence of repair.

The head of the button is circular, and slightly domed, with a flat back. The front has a central cross design in relief, created by four chevron shaped recesses. The arms of the cross terminate with a pellet, with further pellets round the outer edge in the angle of each chevron. The pellets are all very worn. There is a central rib left from the casting process on the reverse. Comparison with other examples suggest that this would have extended in the centre into an attachment loop. However, there is no sign of a loop, and instead, two large (2.8mm diameter) holes have been created through the button, displacing lead to the side on both faces. These holes impose on the design, suggesting they are a repair or reuse of a button that did not form properly when cast.

It has a diameter of 26.5mm, is 5.9mm thick and is 15.87g.

Similar lead alloy buttons have been recorded on the PAS database. Compare WMID-CAE4DF which cites DENO-6AA855 and WAW-7ECF06. They are considered to be late Medieval in dating (14th to 15th Centuries AD).
