PILGRIM BADGE

Unique ID: YORYM-F112E1

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete lead-alloy pilgrim badge of medieval date, c.AD 1200 - 1400. The object is rectangular in plan with a narrow rectangular section. Each of the four corners are broken and worn though would have featured sewing holes. The front faces bears a moulded design featuring a knight on horseback riding left within a beaded border. The name +GVILELM is present along the top edge. The reverse is undecorated.

The imagery represents St Guilhem-le-Desert of Southern France. St Guilhem was a cousin of Charlemagne who halted the invasion of the Frankish Kingdom by the Arabs in AD 793. His tomb became a centre of pilgrimage in the medieval period.

The metal has a dark grey/black patina and survives in good condition. The object is 32.1mm long, 26.9mm wide, 1.6mm thick and weighs 5.2g.

A similar pilgrim badge is in the British Museum collection (ref: 1997,0105.1) http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?assetId=1174009001&objectId=43504&partId=1.
