A post-medieval copper alloy buckle frame of sub-oval/ sub-trapezoidal shape, with separate drilled iron spindle the the remains of a copper alloy chape. Whitehead dates similar examples (pp.98-9) to 1660-1720.
The short outside edges are curved, being concave to the underside. In shape these are hemispherical and are decorated with two sets of overlapping, grooved and curved lines forming an oval shape with tails pointing towards the centre. Inside each oval are three triangular punches, with a further punch on each 'tail'. Joining these hemispheres together are two horizontal cross bars, D-shaped in section, with a raised rectangular area at either end of the axis bar. This is decorated with diagonal incised lines and a groove flanking the edge. Around the axis bar (apparent from orange corrosion visible at either end) are the remains of the sheet copper alloy chape, which extends a little to one side before a jagged break.
Traces of tinning or silvering are apparent on the surface of the metal, which is a mid-green in colour, smooth and shiny. The object measures 26.8x21.5x4.4mm and 6.19g.
