STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: HAMP-5E84DC

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete copper alloy post-medieval (c.1600-1800) hooked strap or belt fitting (probably), broken across its loop and missing the reverse section of the object. It is formed from a single piece of copper alloy, roughly an isoceles triangle in shape with a rounded apex, and decorated to the front with moulded decoration (the details of which is difficult to see due to loss of the original surface of the metal)
Just beyond halfway along the object, closer to the rounded apex, is a pair of transverse ribs. Worn asymmetrical decoration in the form of raised diagonal lines (perhaps foliate in inspiration) are visible to either side. At the opposite end to the rounded apex is a flat curving projection, which would have folded backwards to form a hook.
The object measures 50.1mm in length, 6.5mm in max. width (just below the broken loop; the broken loop measures 5.6mm wide), 0.9mm in thickness and weighs 1.06g. All original patina is lost and the object is extremely worn.
Various similar objects have been recorded on the database including HAMP-F08F81, ESS-7F3AF2, SOM-895C28, HAMP-A9F943, and BH-FCFE73. Many have humanoid decoration, some depicting a naked figure, or Eros or Cupid. They are variously interpreted as part of naval uniform or a sword belt fitting.
