BUTTON

Unique ID: HAMP-5DFBBC

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete early post-medieval (1500-1700) lead alloy button (probably), missing its integral loop and one of four decorative knops. The button is domed to the front and concave to the reverse, with a prominent casting flash from the centre of which extends the incomplete stem. All breaks are old.
A raised ring flanks the central, undecorated, domed element of the button. Around this is a rim decorated with raised transverse ribs. At three of four equidistant points is a flat D-shaped knop, flat to the underside and domed to the front. To the reverse the casting flash runs at a centre point between the knops. The central stem is c.10mm long and curving, and lozenge-shaped in cross-section (measuring 2.9x2.5mm at the break).
There is no direct parallel in Read (2005), but cf. p.72-3 for lead alloy buttons with long shanks. The head of the button measures 19.1x16.1mm and the object has a height/ depth of 10.4mm. It weighs 1.95g.
