UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: NLM-5A7869

Object type certainty: Certain

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast object with a square flat base with a central drilled hole of diameter 5mm. The four sides converge towards a flat top bearing a stamped seriffed letter R. Each side also bears a pair of light vertical grooves, a fluting which recalls the traditional decorative scoring of ceramic jacks. The basal hole appears suited to a wooden peg, so this might equally be a playing piece for use with a holed board. The mass is almost exactly 3 units of 4.07gms, as used in Viking Age Scandinavia for silver bullion transactions, the form and material, however, differ from those of the plain lead weights which observe this system, so this may be coincidental. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800.

Length (base): 14.2mm, Width (base): 13.9mm, Height: 13.5mm, Weight: 12.33gms
