BUCKLE

Unique ID: SOM-4C15FD

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A Post Medieval copper alloy double-looped buckle, probably dating to the 16th century. The buckle has two oval loops with a central cross bar flanked by moulded knops. The buckle frame is plano-convex in cross section and with the outer edge of each frame expanded and moulded into a rossette. Traces of a black lacquer coating survive.

Dimentions: length 42.9mm; width 29.6mm; thickness 3.6mm; weight 8.57g.

Such buckles tend to be attributed a later 16th-century date (Egan 2005, 35; ref. 88, found in a 17th century context but assumed to be residual), although the type must pre-date 1545 as it was found on the Mary Rose (Gardiner ed. 2005, 104; ref. 82A5069). The style of buckle is quite a common one: numerous examples are documented in the literature (from, for example, Norwich, Margeson 1993, 31; ref. 174) and on this database.
