BROOCH

Unique ID: SF-F85CD9

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete cast copper-alloy  brooch of Colchester derivative, Harlowe, double-lugged type dating to the Roman period, c. 43-100 AD. The foot, catchplate and spring mechanism are missing in old damage, otherwise the object is preserved intact. It demonstrates a semi-spherically sectioned winged head, at the midpoint of which on its rear face is a broken double-lug through which the spring and axis bar would have been threaded. The wings are plain and undecorated, while the bow is 'D' shaped in section and demonstrates a narrow central groove, either side of which is reeded decoration that extends from the top of the bow to where it truncates. Preserved in fair condition with an even greyish green patina, it survives to a length of 27.35mm, 18.68mm wide at its head, and 2.34mm thick at the midpoint of the bow. It weighs 3.01g.

Class: Colchester derivative, Harlow, double-lugged
