MINIATURE OBJECT

Unique ID: NLM-DFBDA6

Object type certainty: Possibly
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Lead possible miniature object with a possibly moulded hole of diameter 3.4mm at its broader end. Patinated, with apparent wear on one side of the hole. The finder kindly suggests this to be a miniature axe head, a familiar category of Roman artefact whose discovery is sometimes linked to shrines or temples. These sometimes took the form of archaic tools or weapons, and in this case, if such a resemblance were envisaged, the model might have been an 'axe hammer' or maul of early Bronze Age date, or perhaps a contemporary carpenter's axe. The hole suggests a shaft of perishable material. An alternative identification as a line weight might be posited, though, if so, the hole is unmarked by this use. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.

Length: 21.2mm, Height: 7.8mm, Thickness: 6.6mm, Weight: 6.30gms
