Copper alloy finger ring fragment. A cast signet ring, expanded at its shoulders to form an oval bezel; the narrower part of the band is lost. The bezel bears a deeply engraved and seriffed letter P [imprint], below an oval figure which may represent an eye with a slitted pupil. This might be a visual pun for the vowel sound 'eye' or the letter 'I'. The use of initials on signets became fashionable in Elizabethan times, though the more modern looking letter style here is perhaps more likely Jacobean in date. Abraded. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1630.

Length: 24.0mm, Width: 9.4mm, Thickness: 4.0mm, estimated internal diameter: c.25mm, Weight: 3.87gms

Class: Signet
Inscription: P
