An incomplete copper-alloy headstud brooch of Roman date, c.AD 75 - 200. The head of the brooch comprises rectangular wings, the reverse of which form an integral double lug hinge mechanism. An axis bar is retained within the hinge but the pin no longer survives.

The front of the wings are decorated with three alternating ridge and grooves, giving a stepped effect, and an integral rectangular sectioned bow extends centrally from between the wings tapering to worn break.

An integral headstud is present at the apex of the bow and is decorated with a raised cross resulting in recessed triangular cells between the arms. The front of the bow is decorated with a central column of vertically aligned conjoined lozenge shaped cells flanked by small recessed triangular cells. The reverse of the brooch is flat and undecorated.

The metal has a mid-green patina and is worn. The brooch is 22.8mm long, 17.3mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 6g.

Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.332, fig.191 and date to the 2nd Century AD.
