SPINDLE WHORL

Unique ID: YORYM-CC8D64

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete lead-alloy spindle whorl of medieval date, c.AD 900 - 1500. The object is plano-convex with a flat base and domed top, and a central perforation running through it. All surfaces appear undecorated and are worn.

The metal is a mid-grey colour. The object is 31.3mm in diameter, 13.1mm thick and weighs 69g. The perforation is 9.6mm in diameter suggesting a late Saxon to medieval date as per the thicker spindles of this period (Walton Rogers, 1997, p.1731).

Lead spindle whorls and weights were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty without supporting archaeological context. The function of such objects is also difficult to determine as the forms are common and may have served as spindle whorls or weights used for fishing or goods.
