An incomplete cast middle to late Iron Age brooch, early 4th-2nd century BC.
Description: The brooch is incomplete, and the spring and pin are entirely missing. The head comprises a vertically aligned flat sided pierced knop through which the axis bar would have passed. This bow, which is of roughly circular section and tapers towards the foot, where it loops upwards to a break which may, comparing to similar brooches of the type (e.g BH-CAC2F8) formed an openwork catch plate. The catch plate has an angled upper side, a sub-triangular aperture and a rolled outer side. There is simple incised horizontal lines decorating the bow from the head to the foot. The brooch has a dark green patina and is corroded in places.
Measurements: 40.23mm long, 22.72mm high, 4.89mm wide and 6.11g in weight.
Discussion: This brooch looks very much like a Hawkes and Hull type 1B, 4 or 6, but due to its' extensive wear it is not possible to be certain about which group it belongs to and thus it is not possible to narrow the date further
