Description: Medieval gold annular brooch. The frame is flat on the reverse and bevelled on the front. It exhibits a constriction for the pin and projecting from one side of the frame is a pair of clasped hands. The hands have been made separately and sit in a small notch on the outside of the frame. A small tab projects from the underside of the hands and has been soldered to the back of the frame. Each of the fingers has been defined by an engraved groove. The thumbs are separate, one missing due to an old break. The faceted frame is divided into eight fields by the hands, the pin constriction and two moulded quatrefoils. It exhibits (when viewed with the hands at 12 o'clock) an inscription alternating between an external field and the diagonally adjacent internal field as follows: NE// V[]//O[]// N. Each of the remaining fields is filled with a row of punched annulets. The butt of the pin is wrapped around the constriction. It exhibits a broad collar which projects from either side of the pin on the inside of the frame.

Dimensions: Diameter (not including hands): 12.1mm (internal diameter: 7.5mm), length (including hands): 17.2mm, thickness: 1.2mm, weight: 0.9g.

Date: c. AD 1275 - 1400.
