A copper alloy casket key dating to the 15th century. The key has a kidney shaped bow with a solid shank and simple shaped bit. The looped bow head has a diameter of 15.9 mm, the shank measures 21.1 mm in length. Within the loop are two triangular projections. A simple bit protrudes at a 90 degree angle from the shank to form an 'L' shape.
The key has a dark brown coloured patina. This type of casket key would have been used in chests and cabinets. Similar examples are illustrated by Read (2001) page 73, Fig 47 Ref Nos 563-567).
The key measures 33.61 mm in length, 15.9 mm in width, 3.9 mm in thickness and weighs 3.6 g.
