A worn crudely cast lead-alloy uniface token of the Late Medieval to Early Modern period, dating to AD1400 - AD 1850.

Description: The token is roughly circular and uniface (with decoration on one side). The decoration consists of an 8 spoked wheel with the spokes poking out past the rim. It seems likely that the projecting spokes may be meant to represent a The token is grey and with some patches of off white.

Measurements: 21.38mm in diameter, 1.87mm thick and 4.16g in weight.

Discussion: Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely.

The Powell classification system, in which there are over 30 categories, attempts to classify these leaden tokens according to the designs featured on each face, but it does not assign any chronology. This design doesn't quite fit any of the current powell types save for geometric ones classified as 'class 13. Frameworks '. It is likely this example comes under a group of tokens and tallies Illustrated by Edward Fletcher (2005, 76-76) which seem to relate to windmill sails, water wheels (as in this case) or general millstones. These are generally dated between (c.1600-1850).

Class: Powell 10/2
