HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: WREX-6511C4

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast copper alloy, shield-shaped, heraldic harness pendant of probable 14th-century date (c.1250 - 1450).

The pendant is mostly complete apart from the suspension loop which is partially missing. An integral cast suspension loop located at the centre of the upper edge of the pendant is partially intact with traces of gilding. The loop is set at an angle of 90 degrees to the plane of the pendant. The pierced loop is incomplete. The front face of the pendant has a red field of enamel with a cross patoncé at the centre. There are traces of gilding which suggests the cross was originally picked out in gold. The reverse of the pendant is undecorated, but may also have been gilded. The surface of the harness pendant has been obscured by the use of renaissance wax.

Length: 41.81mm; width: 26.43mm; thickness: 2.81mm; weight: 10.4g.

Notes:

Similar shaped horse harness pendants have been dated to the middle of the medieval period, specifically the 14th century. Similar examples can be seen in Ashley (2002) page 12, examples 80 and 81. Other examples have been recorded by the PAS, this includes pendants from Kings Pyon, Herefordshire (HESH-58C353), Myddle, Shropshire (HESH-4A3A63) and Boxton, Essex (HESH-92D5F2).
