Incomplete medieval copper alloy zoomorphic spout from a ewer or laver dating to the period c. AD 1400 - 1500. Tubular with a zoomorphic terminal in the form of a dog's head with gaping jaws that clasp a circular tube (13mm in diameter).
The head itself consists of a raised brow section which is square in plan. The eyes are indicated by two engraved crescents. Towards the back of the head are two integrally cast rectangular ears, each with a longitudinal recess running down the centre.
The neck projects from the back of the head, terminating in an old break.
A similar spout is illustrated in J.M. Lewis "Bronze Aquamaniles and Ewers" (1987), Finds Research Group Datasheet 7, p.5, fig.8a, from Cardiff Castle moat and is dated to the 15th century. Similar examples have also been recovered from Oxford, Dorchester on Thames and Netherhall.
