BUCKLE

Unique ID: SF-377251

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete cast copper-alloy single-looped buckle dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. Though missing its plate, the buckle frame and pin survive intact. This buckle corresponds to Meols type 10, demonstrating a 'D' shaped frame with an offset constricted strap-bar (round which the pin is wound) and thickened outer edge to the frame with circular knops on either side and a deeply grooved pin-rest. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures 18.19mm long, 16.93mm wide, and 2.71mm thick at the midpoint of the frame. It weighs 3.16g.

Similar buckles are published by Egan (2007) see p. 91, nos. 544, 545 and 546. However, the thickened portion of the strap bar is more akin to no. 515, though with prominent knops to its edges.

Class: Meols type 10
