A complete Medieval copper alloy seal matrix of pedastal type, probably dating to c. AD 1200-1300. The matrix tapers from a circular die into a hexagonal-sectioned pedastal, terminating in a trefoilate-loop with a triple-stranded collar. The die is engraved with a design depicting flowers sprouting from a two-footed, bulbous basin, or perhaps a poorly executed example of the common motif of two opposed busts. The inscription reads (star) S' hENRI (GV)hV(N)VI.
Dimensions: Diameter: 22.5mm; height 31.2mm; weight 19.42g.
Harvey & McGuiness (1996) note that after 1300 seal matrices increasingly feature anonymous religious inscriptions and become smaller, the relatively large size and personal inscription on this example suggesting a 13th century date.
