Treasure case 2018 T502: Disclaimed, returned to finder

Description: An incomplete silver pedestal seal matrix, with missing loop. The handle is faceted, hexagonal in cross section, tapering from the face of the seal into a double banded transverse collar at the juncture between the handle and loop. The latter is incomplete, but was probably originally trefoilate.

The seal face is oval-shaped and engraved with a design depicting a lion lying right and facing the viewer, and with a more shallowly engraved sun in the top left corner. This is within a beaded border around the perimeter.

Dimensions: length 12.1mm; width 16.2mm; thickness 17.6mm; weight 4.7g.

Discussion: Seal matrices with similar forms (trefoil-shaped loop, hexagonal cross section) appear on the PAS database (SF-64B1B6, NMS-3EA0E6, NARC-214392), dating to the 17th century. However, the database lacks any exact parallels for this seal's lion and sun design.

The object appears to consist of over 10% precious metal and be over 300 years old at the time of finding and as such qualifies as potential Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
