A cast copper alloy stylus of probable Roman date. The stylus is 86 mm in length with a circular section shaft that is 5.2 mm in diameter and weighing 17.55 g. One end has been bevelled on both sides to produce an almost semi-circular, spatulate eraser edge 7.2 mm in width and 2 mm thick; the opposite end is tapered to a slightly rounded point that is 2 mm in diameter. The stylus is undecorated and has a patchy dark green and brown patina that is similar to a Roman dupondius of Vespasian that was found on the same side of the field. It is similar in profile with a spatulate terminal to Roman styli, of Manning's Type 1a, illustrated by Bishop (1996) on p.35, fig.19, nos.189-192, but these are made of iron, and another no.199, which is made of copper alloy.
