A rim fragment from a cast copper alloy cauldron. The fragment is 75 mm in length, 35.5 mm in height and 3 mm thick, narrowing to 2.2 mm thick before widening at the rim; its weight is 46.95 g. The upper edge of the rim is internally bevelled with a triangular profile on the interior and flush with the upper edge of the vessel on the exterior. The exterior surface is smooth with very slight pitting, probably from the casting process. The interior surface is smooth, with little sign of pitting. With a diameter of around 190 mm the rim falls close to the lower end of the normal range for a cauldron and suggests a vessel with a capacity of between 3 and 5 pints. At the broken edge of the fragment the exterior curves outwards at the point where the rim was attached to the body of the cauldron. There are small patches of black organic matter on the exterior and interior of the rim which were burnt on to the surface when the cauldron was near the fire. Cauldrons with everted, or out-turned, rims and bag-shaped bodies, were produced throughout Southern England in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Butler and Green (2003) illustrate two such cauldrons, from the Sturton Foundry at South Petherton, Somerset, on page 111, nos.106-7, dating from the late 17th century. This founder is known to have produced cauldrons of various sizes, ranging between 190 mm and 380 mm in diameter.
