Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4, flat wing ends type), c.f. Mackreth Type 4.i. Plate 47, AD c. 80-240. The copper alloy brooch has a semi-cylindrical undecorated wing (one wing is missing) with the axis bar, spring and pin all missing. At the centre of the upper edge of the wings there is a trace of an integral hook. The bowhead is hump-like in profile and is decorated with a vertical ridge which continues down the bow. Either side of the ridge there is a column of high-relief obliquely angled lentoids. Either side of the head there is a slight platform. Only a trace of the bow remains and it is oval in section. The break of the bow is not too recent.
The surface of the brooch has a well-developed grey-green patina which is heavily abraded.
It measures 27.55mm in length, 15.24mm in width, and weighs 5.72g.
The brooch is a Polden Hill type, Bayley and Butcher (2004:160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands and suggest they date to AD 80 to 120. Mackreth (2011) classifies this type as a Type 4i.
