A Medieval silver double patard of Charles 'the Bold' of Burgundy dating AD1467-1477.
The coin has wear and slight damage to the edge and a fold to the reverse at the top. The obverse has a squared shield of Burgundy with a rampant lion at the centre and the legend [K]AROLVS [DEI] GRA DV[X] BG BRA[B Z] LIM translating to 'Charles, by the grace of God Duke of Burgundy, Brabant and Limberg'(present day Belgium). The reverse shows an ornate short cross fleury, expanded in the centre to contain a lion rampant. The legend reads [SI]T NOMEN DOMINI BE[NEDICTVM] which translates to 'May the Name of the Lord be Blessed'.The coin weighs 2.8g and measures 26.23mm in diameter with a thickness of 0.93mm.
In 1469 a monetary agreement between Duke Charles and King Edward IV made the Burgundian coinage in the Low Countries legal tender in England. In practice, only the double patard - also known as a 'double plack' -established itself in currency, with a formal valuation equal to the silver groat, i.e. fourpence. Thus, in the late 15th century and early 16th century, double patards of Charles the Bold were a part of the English currency. Their diminishing use ended finally with Henry VIII's Great Debasement 1544-1551.
