FINGER RING

Unique ID: DUR-B7B181

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Description: A complete Posie or Posy finger ring, with plain band and interior Roman script ' inscription, dating to the mid post-medieval period (c. AD1600-1700).

The ring is 'D' shaped in section with a plain convex outer band. Around the inner band is inscribed the legend: 'In the my Choyce I doe rejoyce' (In thee my choice I do rejoice) in italic lettering, prefixed by the letter 'H'.

Discussion: The inscription is listed in Evans (1931, 60) with the correct spelling of 'thee', and a number of similar plain gold band rings with the inscription are held in the British Museum's collection, including: 1961, 1202.40; 1961, 1202.27; AF.1299. All of the latter feature makers marks, and date from the later 16th to the later 17th century. It may be that the letter 'H' that prefixes the inscription of this Posy is also a maker's mark.

Dimensions: 20.92mm diameter, 17.54mm internal diameter, 4.93mm high, 1.78mm band thickness, 5.6g in weight.
