A medieval silver coin: a penny of Richard II (AD 1377 - 99), York mint, probably Type Ia but not corresponding exactly to any of the groups in North, nor any of the coins in Purvey (1962). Purvey mentions a quatrefoil after ACI on one reverse die of Type IA 3, but this does not appear to be listed in conjunction with a saltire before CIVI. The coin is 16.9mm diameter, 0.6mm thick and 0.87g. Compare North (1991) Volume 2, number 1329 - 1330 on page 63.
Carl Savage (PAS Volunteer) agrees that the lettering is consistent with Type 1. He adds that in the plates of Purvey (1962), some reverses of 1A2 and 1A4 have a saltire before CIVI but not after RACI. Some reverse dies also have extra pellets in the quarters but there is no extra pellet on this coin. Annoyingly the lettering which distinguishes the different sub classes (the A, and R) are not visible so it is difficult to say with absolute certainty which obverse and reverse group this coin belongs to. His feeling is that it may be an unlisted reverse die of type 1A3 or 1A4.
Obverse:
(RICARDVS) x RE[X] x ANGLIE
Forward facing crowned bust with possible pellets by shoulders. Saltire stops.
Reverse:
x CIVI TAS EBOR ACI quatrefoil
Long cross with three pellets in each angle and quatrefoil with pellet at centre.
