Description: A complete silver early post-medieval dress hook eye clasp (c. AD1500-1600)

The convex central plate of the fastener is circular in plan with twisted silver wire filigree decoration around the edge of the outer face. At the centre of the plate is a cinquefoil arrangement of a single raised pellet surrounded by five radiating twisted silver wire circular 'petals'. A further, smaller, pellet is visible between the fourth and fifth petal. On the reverse a single soldered silver wire forms a large lower loop with two smaller upper attachment loops. The fastener is in generally good condition, the lower loop is slightly misshapen, and traces of gilding survive on the central plate.

Discussion: This fastener belongs to Read's (2008, 159-160) early post-medieval Class B, Type 2, dating to the 16th and possibly into the 17th century. The fastener is very similar in form to illustrated examples 598 (LVPL-033E25) and 599 (BH-0174E0).

Dimensions: central plate: 10.18mm diameter, 1.08mm thick; wire: 0.67mm in diameter; overall: 16.86mm long, 10.31mm wide, 2.96mm thick. Weight: 0.9g

The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age and precious metal content.
