Roman (70 - 200 AD) brooch: An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative, double lug, Harlow style brooch 100% of the brooch is present. The wings are semi-cylindrical with no caps. The exterior of the wings are decorated with three vertical ridges on either side of the bow head. In the centre of the interior of the wings there is a perforated vertical lug, with two perforations, through the lower perforation the copper alloy axis bar passes. The spring is coiled around the axis bar ten times and the chord passes through the upper perforation. The pin is complete and tapers to a sharp point.
The bow head is hump-like, and has prominent ridge which is sited on a triangular platform which tapers down the bow to the truncated bow foot. The catchplate has a prominent ridge on the upper edge and has two triangular openwork perforations.
The brooch measures 61.03mm length, is 32.97mm width across wings and 22.81mm thick. It weighs 25.8 grams.
The brooch has a dark brown patina and is in very good condition.
A similar brooch is illustrated in Mackreth, Plate 32 No. 11498, and is classified as Chap 3, Part 1 Group 1b dating to c. 70 to 200.
