Copper alloy probable harness pendant. Cast equal-armed cross with rounded flat-faced knops at the ends of its arms, an oval suspension loop at the top, and a central rectangular panel with a tiny triangular hollow flanking each side of each arm where it meets the panel. At least twenty-seven small [diameter 1.5mm] ring and dot are stamped on the display side, the larger number in a central vertical row. Gilding traces appear on the display face. The reddish tint of the metal might point to a Viking-Age date. However, the use of gilding and the suspension loop are both characteristic of harness pendants, though this may be a non-armorial type, which pre-date the more common heraldic versions. The simple cross pommee form also appears among smaller pendants intended for personal and prophylactic wear, which are ascribed a slightly later date. Suggested date: Medieval, 1150-1250.
