WEIGHT

Unique ID: NMS-FEDA1C

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Late Saxon weight comprising a square lead base on which is set a white-metal coated copper alloy four-sided truncated pyramidical mount. A fine contour line surrounds all four sides of the mount, and on its flat top sinuous interlace, now damaged and incomplete lies recessed within a square collar. Part of the motif remains covered by a layer of pressed gold sheet. The base is abraded and pockmarked with small parts of the surface missing. Most of the coating has been lost from the sides. Dimensions 22 x 22 x 16mm. Weight 43.04g / 664.2 grains. The mount is of Irish origin and belongs to the 8th or 9th century. Its reuse as part of a weight probably took place in the second half of the 9th or 10th century. When new the object might have approximated to 2 Scandinavian units of c.24g (Kruse 1992, 86). For a much larger mount of similar form but with more elaborate decoration see WAW-3168EE.
